Whether they have, or intend to have a fully functioning transactional website selling products online, or perhaps a more basic site which only provides information about the company and its product or services, they know they need to be online.</p>
<p>The difficulty for a lot of smaller business is understanding what they need to do to maximise their online presence. They may have grasped the need for a website, but then what do they do with it, how do they measure success or progress? On top of that the Internet is fast moving and new buzz words are being bandied about every week; Twitter, Linked In, Google AdWords, Social Media and SEO are some examples.</p>
<p>For most smaller business&#8217;s the problem is that unless the owner or decision-maker is &#8220;tech-savvie&#8221; and prepared to dedicate time to developing their own knowledge then all of these buzz words are likely to have as much meaning as someone talking to them in Norwegian.</p>
<p>At its most simplistic level the performance of a website should be measured by traffic volumes (number of visitors) and conversion rate. A conversion could be a purchase, or getting a visitor to do something you want such as fill in an enquiry form. If a company sells products online it should also measure its average order value.</p>
<p>All of these figures can be collected by installing tracking software such as Google Analytics which is both incredibly powerful and free! Together, these three basic measurements provide the fundamentals for tracking site performance. More importantly though it is by addressing each of these fundamental measurements that site performance can be improved.</p>
<p><span id="more-2301"></span>Once these measurements are in place the company can then set about improving them. However they should not focus purely on one measurement in isolation without addressing the performance of the others. The temptation for most businesses is to focus on increasing traffic, but it should be remembered that a half of one percent increase in conversion rates has exactly the same effect as a fifty percent increase in traffic on an e-commerce website. Having said that, traffic is undeniably important and we&#8217;ll look at methods to increase it next time.</p>

Too many small business owners are racing each other to the bottom with the continuous quest to have the lowest prices in their niche. <p>When you try to keep your prices down, or you try to beat your competition on price, you are essentially running your business right in the ground. Deep discounting is not a sustainable business model, because there will always be someone else that can do it cheaper than you can.</p>
<p>This low price myth also creates a commodity out of your product, where you train your customers that your business or product has nothing to offer except a low price.</p>
<p><span id="more-2299"></span>Instead, you need to focus on value. Adding value to a higher priced product is a surefire way to maintain a high level of profit, while keeping your customers at the same time. 80% of your customers are not price buyers. These are people that want service and to be treated like human beings instead of a number.</p>
<p>If you focus on the price buyers only, your worst customers, then you are leaving 80% of your customers out in the cold.</p>
<p>The price buyer is your absolute worst customer. These people take up most of your time, return the most of your products, and provide you with the least amount of profit in the end. By increasing your prices, you can get rid of some of these terrible customers and maintain a great value-driven relationship with your best customers at the same time.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s all about positioning. When you position your business in such a way that you can show people their overall costs are going to be lower by doing business with you, since you provide so much value, then they will stay loyal even if you have higher prices. Of course you need to make sure that you are charging prices that your market can bear, but that will be a very wide range in most cases.</p>
<p>When testing your prices, make sure that you are working from the top down. Start with a very inflated price and slowly remove. When you work from the bottom up, it will be much harder to get people to pay more after they saw a sticker price that was lower a week ago.</p>
<p>It is important to test price often, however. You want to charge as much as you possibly can for the product or service that you offer. When you don&#8217;t test, many times you find out too late that you have been leaving a ton of money on the table.</p>

You need to ensure that your business mission and practices are in alignment with your personal beliefs, ethics and motivations. When you have created your business around a strong ethic and focus, you know where you want your business to go, how you want to get there, and why.</p>
<p>When you have a positive mindset based on personal integrity and authenticity, it is easy to bring on the best team members and clients, to create and market services and packages that reflect your passion, make consistent business decisions, and establish a strong reputation and &#8220;brand.&#8221; You are less likely to take on the &#8220;wrong&#8221; clients, offer services you don&#8217;t like to carry out just to build your client roster, and make other iffy decisions based on what you need &#8220;at the moment.&#8221;<span id="more-2290"></span></p>
<p>When your business goals are in alignment with your core values and passion, when you are not simply getting through this day, week, or month, stomping out fires, you are more likely to take things one step at a time, and less likely to fall victim to overwhelm. Your time and energy are freed up to allow you to focus more on the long view. Success is not complicated &#8211; it&#8217;s a matter of being persistent and focused on a daily basis.</p>
<p>Here is an easy exercise to help you get your business mindset into focus:</p>
<p>a. Write down the three key reasons why you LOVE your business.</p>
<p>b. Write down the three key ways in which your business is of VALUE to the world, and read them aloud.</p>
<p>c. Take the top reason from each list, and combine the two into one. This is your business mindset &#8220;mantra.&#8221;</p>
<p>d. Keep your mantra in a place where you will see it often throughout the day. Say your mantra aloud every morning as you are about to begin your day. Reflect upon it throughout the day or whenever you begin to feel overwhelm or doubt.</p>
<p>Fostering a mindset for success is as simple as knowing who you are, and why your work is of value in the world, and using that knowledge as the foundation for your daily decision making and action plan. By aligning your actions and decisions with your core values on a daily basis, you are giving yourself the gift of authenticity, clarity and focus that will create ease in bringing your gifts to the world.</p>
